He was a crackshot with a pistol and once won a pair of nickel plated 45's in a match lighting contest. He also supposedly knocked out John L Sullivan when John L travelled the country in his later years taking punches for money.
When he moved from Terre Haute to Paris he was working as a watchman on the railroad.When he retired from the Railroad he ran the City Landfill
