HARRY C. ACHENBACH
Death of H. C. Achenbach Saddens Community
Popular Young Man of This City Passes Away Wednesday Morning After 10-Days Illness

Harry Achenbach, a well known and respected young man of Goodland, passed away at his home here early Wednesday morning. He was taken ill on New Year's day and for a number of days his condition was regarded as very critical. The community was gladdened Tuesday, when reports advised that he was somewhat improved, but the entire city was grieved to learn of his death Wednesday morning.

Mr. Achenbach was employed at the Goodland Clothing store for the past several years. Fewer people in the county enjoyed a wider acquaintance than Mr. Achenbach and no one person in the county had more friends. His pleasing personality was always winning and holding friends for him. A sign on the door of the Goodland Clothing store Wednesday afternoon "Closed on account of the death of Harry" is significant of measuring his popularity.

Services were held at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Luther Moore. Goodland lodge No. 321, A. F. & A. M., acted as an escort from the undertaking establishment to the church and from the church to the depot. The active pall bearers were C. J. Shimeall, L. N. Shaw, L. E. Mercer, Ed Elder, George Manion and Richard Auer. The honorary pall bearers were Fred Moore, Harold Copeland, Leo Schisler, Thos. Horn, E. E. Harding and J. A. Skinner.

All business houses in the city were closed between 4 and 5 o'clock, the hour of the funeral service.

Mr. Achenbach's father, Mr. H. C. Achenbach of Clay Center, was at his son's bedside when death occurred. His father-in-law, Mr. Charles Westling, of Clay Center, arrived a few hours after death occurred.

The obituary:

Harr Clayton Achenbach was born Oct. 10, 1889, at Clay Center, Kansas and departed into eternal life on the morning of January 10, 1923, at the age of 33 years and 3 months. On the 16th day of April, 1911, he was united in marriage to Irene Westling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Westling, also of Clay Center.

Shortly after his marriage he went to Fort Madison, Ia., and from there to Falls City, Nebr. After a short residence in Falls City, he moved to Sabetha, Kans., and from Sabetha to Goodland, where he resided until his death.

He was the youngest son in a family of four brothers and one sister and is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Achenbach and two brothers, Ralph and June [sic?] Achenbach, who reside at Clay Center, and his sister, Mrs. Ethel Johnston, who lives at Green, Kans. He also leaves to mourn his loss his wife and four children, Maxine, Frank, Dewain and Clyde.

He was a member of the A. F. & A. M. lodge of Falls City, Nebr., and was active in the fraternity's great work in this city.

About two years ago he obeyed the gospel and with his wife became members of the Christian church of Goodland, in which relationship he gave promise of growing into the position of fine Christian leadership. It was the purpose of the Christian church to elect him next Sunday morning to the office of deacon. This relationship with the church on earth, now broken by the hand of death, he has gone to receive in the church triumphant.

Mr. Achenbach was a most exemplary young man, trusted, admired and loved by his employers to a degree that was very unusual. He likewise was so esteemed by the entire community. It would be difficult to find any other person in Sherman county who had a warmer place in the hearts of all the citizens, than had Harry Achenbach.

His body was taken to Clay Center, his former home, where it was laid to rest in the Greenwood cemetery at that place.
