Kate Sturm McCall, daughter of James L. L. and Eliza Ann (Sturm) McCall, was born at Mount Vernon, KY. The family moved to Waco in 1852. She graduated from Waco Female College in 1865 and was teaching in East Waco just prior to her marriage to Edward Rotan on August 22, 1869. They were the parents of 9 children.
A member of Women's Club since 1894, Mrs. Rotan was the first president and one of the organizers of the State Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a regent of the Henry Downs Chapter of the D.A.R. and a Colonial Dames. She served as president of the Antoinette Rotan Home for elderly women, vice-president of the state United Charities, and a member of the control board which established a State Home for Girls at Gainesville. Mrs. Rotan also helped to establish Waco's first public library and in 1911 gave the city the Rotan (Riverside) Drive which led from Washington Ave. to Cameron Park.
