MacFarlane was a nationally known author and short story writer. He was at one time, a stage actor in San Francisco and was a member of the L.R. Stockwell Company at the Columbia and later the Grove Street Theatres as well as the Dewey Theatre in Oakland. MacFarlane committed suicide as a result of ill health - he shot himself in the head on the steps of a local morgue.
