Adney J. Fenderson Dies At Age of 96; Veteran Merchant

Adney J. Fenderson, 96, dean of merchant tailors and one of Saco's oldest residents, died Wednesday evening in Saco. He started as an apprentice in 1879 and later opened his own tailoring establishment on Elm Street, Saco. His active business career extended to 1946 but he maintained his activity in Fenderson's clothing store until the last few months of his life.

He was born in Kennebunkport, the son of Alexander and Jane (Wakefield) Fenderson.

He was a member of the Second Parish Unitarian Church and belonged to the Saco Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Masonic Fraternal organization. He was active in boating throughout his life and sailed both motor and sail boats on the Saco river. He was the oldest member of the Saco Yacht Club.

In younger life he sang in church quartets and took part in church activities in the two cities.

He served in the Saco city government and represented Ward 7 as a member of the common council in 1904-05-06 and 1918 and was alderman from the same ward in 1911. In 1934 he became overseer of the poor.

Survivors include his widow, Isabel; three sons, Henry, Cambridge, Mass., Richard, New York City, and Robert, Saco; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
