Trio Jailed In Slaying At Grocery
Suspect Admits Woman Gave Him About $50 During 2 Years
Another Tells Police He Was a Go-Between, Delivered Notes
Three men were held by police last night for questioning in connection with the death of Mrs. Francis Aagaard, 40, who was shot by a lone gunman in her Spruce place grocery store late Saturday.
Wounded in the abdomen Mrs. Aagaard died early Sunday in the Swedish hospital despite emergency treatment.
Arrested on Tip
The three suspects were picked up last night at their homes on a "hot" tip from an anonymous telephone caller who told Detective Supervisor Charles Van Rickley the three "knew something" about the shooting.
Police said one of the men claimed he had known Mrs. Aagaard for two years, and that she called on him approximately three times each week in that period.
He told police he had accepted approximately $50 dollars from her in that time. The second of the suspects told detectives he was a go-between for Mrs. Aagaard and the first man. He said he delivered numerous notes to the dead woman asking her for money. She never paid him, he said, but always went to the other man's apartment whenever she received such a request.
Together Saturday
The third man told police that he and the first man were together Saturday when they were informed of the shooting of Mrs. Aagaard.
Police were investigating the possibility the woman was the victim of a shakedown. They reasoned that an emissary may have been sent by the extortioner to demand more money from Mrs. Aagaard, and that he shot her when she threatened him with a knife.
Mrs. Aagaard, before she died, told police she was alone in her grocery store at 1365 Spruce place when a man entered and ordered some meat.
She said she was cutting it with a knife when he told her "this is a stick-up." She told him to put down his gun, she said, and he shot her.
Police also worked on the theory a demented gunman was at large in the neighborhood. A few hours after Mrs. Aagaard was shot, William Becker, proprietor of a grocery shop at 1511 Spruce place, was held up and robbed of $15. The bandit fired at shot at Mr. Becker but missed.
There was no loss of money In the Aagaard store.
