World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Ceylon Sri Lanka, he served as a Major in the 10th Battalion Alexandra Princess of Wales's Yorkshire Regiment, British Army. On July 1, 1916, at Fricourt, France, when Major Loudoun-Shand's company attempted to attack the enemy's trenches, they were met by fierce machine-gun fire which stopped their progress. He immediately leapt on the parapet of the trench, helped the men over it and encouraged them until he was mortally wounded. Even then, he insisted on being propped up in the trench and went on encouraging his men until he died. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously vested the Victoria Cross with father receiving his award from the King at Buckingham Palace on March 31, 1917.
