ALAMO - Robert Ernst Streu, age 79 of Alamo, Texas passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2012. Bob was born on February 22, 1933 in Two Rivers, WI, the eldest son of the late Albert and Salome Streu. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his infant sister Sally.


He attended school in Two Rivers, and was a member of the Two Rivers Washington High School graduating class of 1951. Bob enlisted in the United States Navy where he served for four years during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison to study engineering. Heeding the call of the family business, Streu Construction Company, Bob left to begin a career that spanned over 30 years. Starting as a highway construction laborer, he quickly rose through the company, eventually becoming its President and CEO, where he served for many years. Bob retired from Streu Construction in 1987. He married Shirley Benzinger on November 12, 1955 at the St. Luke's Catholic Church, Two Rivers. During their marriage, they were blessed with five children, John, Jay, Lisa, Lori and Lynne. Shirley and his children were the loves of Bob's life.


During Bob's years in Two Rivers, he was member of the Elks Club, the Lions Club, and the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Following his retirement he moved to South Texas, he joined the McAllen Elk's Club and the Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo, Texas, where he remained a member until his death. Bob was a lifelong avid Green Bay Packer fan, attending their games in Wisconsin and watching them on television in Texas. In his later years, he enjoyed watching and chatting with the golfers passing by in his back yard at the Alamo Country Club. Bob also enjoyed listening to live German polka music and going for car rides.


He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley; two sons: John (Linda) Streu, Two Rivers, WI and Jay (Mary) Streu, Two Rivers, WI; three daughters: Lisa (Steve) Lehmann, West University Place, TX, Lori Streu, Alamo, TX and Lynne (Philip) Riley, Dallas, TX; and 7 grandchildren: Michael Streu, Milwaukee, WI, Bryan Streu, Milwaukee, WI, David Streu, Carmel, IN, Ryan Streu, Mayfield Heights, OH; Tyler Lehmann, San Antonio, TX, Alyssa Lehmann, Tuscaloosa, AL and Laila El-Far, San Antonio, TX; his sister, Madelin Streu, Bloomington, MN; and brother, E.J. (Rhonda) Streu, Scottsdale, AZ.


Visitation was on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral service at Resurrection Catholic Church, Alamo, Texas. Burial followed at Val Verde Memorial Gardens, Donna, Texas. The family greeted relatives and friends at Alamo Country Club from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012. Condolences may be sent to 309 Diana Drive, Alamo, Texas 78516. A memorial fund has been established at Alamo Country Club 438 Country Club Drive, Alamo, TX 78516 in memory of Bob. Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
