Anthony S Davenport, of Co. I, enrolled Sep. 10, 1861 in Elkhart by Capt. Heath as a Surgeonfs Mate; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 30. He was 5' 9.50" tall, dark complexion, black eyes, and black hair. Born Dec. 13, 1833 in Shelby Co., OH, employed as a physician, married to Henrietta Benham, resident of Elkhart, in Elkhart Co., IN. Died Aug. 4, 1862, of chronic diarrhea at home in Elkhart with rank of Private. Notes: Son of John and Clarinda Brodrick Davenport. Served first in Co. C of 9th IN from Apr. to Jul 1861. Called Dr. Davenport and acting mate of Dr. Martin by Capt. Heath. In March 1862, was a hospital nurse. Fought at Donelson. Absent sick May and Jun. 1862. Left wife and 2 children when he died Aug. 4, 1862; buried in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Block E/Row 14/#44. Obituary says died at age 28 years 7 months. Henrietta filed Widow's Pension Application to receive Widow's Pension Certificate #5201 Dec. 22, 1862; Charles Laird, guardian, filed Minor's Pension to receive Minor's Pension Certificate #171292 May 12, 1875.
