World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Innellan, Scotland, he served as a Captain in the 4th Battalion, Grenadier Guards, British Army. In actions at Gonnelieu, France, on December 1, 1917, a unit on Captain Paton's left was driven back, leaving his company surrounded. He walked up and down adjusting the defense line, within 50 yards under heavy enemy fire. He then personally removed several wounded men and was the last to leave the village. Later he again adjusted the line and when the Germans counter-attacked four times, each time he sprang on to the parapet, deliberately risking his life. He was eventually mortally wounded and died. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awared the Victoria Cross on February 13, 1918.
