Peter Louis Kovar, Sr. of Sealy passed away on April 24 in Katy at the age of 88. He was born in Ellinger, Texas where he was also raised. He met Judith Buzek, who would become his beloved wife of 60 years, in Wharton during 1940. Pete joined the Army on November 25, 1942; before deploying he proposed to Judy. He served in World War II as a Technician, Fifth Grade, under General George S. Patton, Jr. in the Headquarters company, 3rd army. He fought in the battles of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rineland and Central Europe. Pete earned the World War II Victory Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars and the Marksman Carbine Medal.

Pete, being honorably discharged on December 12, 1945, returned home. He married Judy on January 7, 1946. They settled in Sealy to raise their two sons, Pete Kovar, Jr. and Joe Kovar. Pete delivered butane to the local area for many years. He then worked as a machinist for the Houston Division of the Ladish Company for 15 years. After retiring from Ladish, Pete worked at Bill's Grocery in Sealy for over 25 years. He enjoyed his job because it allowed him to form relationships with people in the community.

Pete and Judy shared many interests; they loved gardening, fishing, animals and music. They formed a family polka band called the Sealy Playboys. They both sang and Pete played the guitar, entertaining people for years. They, later on, opened Pop and Grannies Fireworks Stand which supplied children with fireworks for the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve for 28 years. Over the years, Pete loved to spend time with his wife, sons, and grandchildren. He and Judy took all the grandchildren on many fishing trips to the coast and Vykoukal's Pond in Sealy. One thing Pete held dear to his heart was baseball. He loved attending his grandchildren's and later his great-grandchildren's baseball games. The family has so many wonderful memories of Pop. He was a great man who always had a smile on his face and loved his family dearly. He will be greatly missed by all.
