Nancy Jane McCracken, daughter of George and Amanda Hawks, was born in Lucas County, Ia., August 31, 1862, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jess Devore, near Cuba, Kan., June 11, 1955, at the age of 92 years, 10 months and 11 days.

On July 3, 1881, she was united in marriage to William Carol McCracken. To this union were born 13 children, 2 sons and 11 daughters.

She with her pioneer parents came to Republic county at the age of eight, where her family homesteaded. She lived here for 86 years. However, since 1940, she had spent the winter months with her daughter, Mrs. Oliver Lawson at Marquette.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William McCracken; two sons, Thaddeus and Henry; two daughter, Eva Baird and Lucy Travis.

Surviving and mourning her departure are her daughter, Mrs. Amanda Trimble of Cuba, Mrs. Edna Johnston of Belleville, Mrs. Olive Oliver of Haddam, Mrs. Ara Roper of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. May Bergstrom of Clyde, Mrs. Elizabeth DeVore of Cuba, Mrs. Della Anderson of Clyde, Mrs. Hazel Peterson of Clifton, Mrs. Cecile Lawson of Marquette; one sister, Mrs. Emma Williamson of Fort Morgan, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth McCracken of Abilene; 33 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
