Shelby Francis Sullivan, Sr., a 42 year resident of Solana Beach, California, was born on July 11, 1927 in Seattle, Washington. He passed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on October 12, 2012 surrounded by his beloved wife of 57 years, Nancy Nordstrom Sullivan, and his eight children: Shelby Jr., Carol, Elizabeth, Patrick, Nancy-Rose, Christopher, Peter, and Johanna. He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren, six sons and daughters-in-law, brother-in-law Thomas Nordstrom, and several nieces and nephews.

Shelby honorably served in the US Navy for seven years and is a veteran of World War II. He received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1956 from the University of Washington. His career was dedicated to the protection of his country. A nationally recognized expert in the field of undersea acoustic surveillance, he retired in 1993 with over 51 years of combined federal service. After "formal" retirement, he continued to work in his field where he was employed at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory until his passing.

Shelby was dedicated to the service of others in his church and community. He was a long time member and supporter of the Catholic Community at UC San Diego. For over 26 years, Shelby was an active leader in the San Gabriel and San Diego-Imperial Valley Boy Scout Councils. The Boy Scouts of America honored Shelby with the Bronze Pelican Medal Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of Catholic youth scouts.

Shelby Francis Sullivan, Sr. is dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
