Sheehan was part of a group of soldiers who were preparing to return to their base May 25, 2004 after escorting a military intelligence detail. He was killed in a mortar attack on the group. He and Alan Bean, who died in the same attack, were the first Vermont National Guard combat casualties in decades. He was a project manager for Engineers Construction Inc. in South Burlington, where co-workers remembered his leadership skills and contagious smile. When the call came to deploy his unit, his first concern was for his wife. The older of his two children was in kindergarten. Counselors were called in for that class and for the sixth graders, who'd been sending letters and care packages to the unit.

Kevin enjoyed coaching for the Milton Youth Soccer league. He began playing hockey for the Full Stride Hockey Organization in 2003. His love for hockey was so great, he became assistant coach for the Milton Youth Hockey Association. Kevin is survived by his wife Heather, and their two precious children, Nathaniel John, and Alyson Margret Sheehan.
