Lena was born in Mecklenburg, Prussia, the daughter of Henry and Caroline Lenux Lentz. She was the sister of William, Frederick, and Henry and had a sister, Elizabeth. Lena married William Smith (Schmidt) who worked as a carpenter and later, a "bottler". Lena and William had six children; baby boy Schmidt born in 1865, Lena Eliza Smith (born 1868-1941), Mary Charlotte Fredericke (1870-1957), Frederick (1873-1907), Elizabeth (1877-1946) and Emma A (1882-1944). Lena spent her early childhood in Ashland, Pa. But later moved to Wilkes Barre which is where she raised her family.
