Betty J. Cole, 82, of 5 Walnut St., Towanda, passed away Tuesday morning, Jan. 21, 2003, at Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
Born Aug. 6, 1920, in Port Matilda, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mildred Acker Gordon Sr.
Betty worked as a housekeeper for several area Towanda families throughout the years. Her main interest in life encompassed her home and family.
Betty was a life member of the Towanda Gun Club; the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 Auxiliary; Beirne-Webster VFW Post No. 1568, Towanda, Auxiliary; and Rome Fire Company Auxiliary, and was a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge, Towanda, Auxiliary.
Betty loved playing bingo and playing cards with her family and friends.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Linda and Mack Cranmer of Rome, Arlene and Bill Lantz of Towanda, Barbara and Bill Gerould of Rome, and Harry Jr. and Mary Cole of Rome; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Genevieve Pierce of North Towanda, Evalee Wilcox of Towanda, Mary Bunch of Wellsboro, Pa., and Rose Lilly of Athens and Florida; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Dorothy Gordon of Texas; a sister-in-law, Alice Gordon of Texas; a very close friend, Charlotte Gates of Towanda; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Leonard Yates, who was killed in November of 1944 while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, and Harold Cole Sr., in June of 1975; a brother, John Gordon; and a granddaughter, Shelly R. Gerould, in 1998.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
The funeral and committal service will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Allen Hulslander, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Towanda, officiating.
Interment will be in Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may be directed to the charity or organization of one's choice in Betty J. Cole's memory.
