The coroner Mr. Vaughn found he had been intoxicated and going home late at night accompanied by Jack Romjue (or Hornjue), Jack McKenzie, and Bob Dexter. All gave testimony to these facts. The Heppner Gazette reported on January 9, 1897 that the Circuit Court's Coroner's Inquest was settled on the third day and "bills allowed." [whatever *that* means]
Soon after his death, his pregnant wife took their six children and moved back to Whitman County, Washington where Otis' parents lived and farmed.
