Thomas married Elizabeth Hartman (1833 - 1910+) Oct. 7, 1860, in Belmont county, OH.
Thomas was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. C, 1st West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, on Sept. 5, 1861, in Martinsville, OH. He was mustered into service on Oct. 1, 1861, in Wheeling, WV. He received a surgeon's certificate of disability, and was discharged on Sept. 23, 1862, while in the Mt. Pleasant Hospital, Washington, D.C.. He was mustered out in Oct. 1862.
Thomas re-enlisted in Co. C, 1st West Virginia Volunteer Infantry, on Mar. 23, 1864, at Wheeling, WV, and was mustered in on Mar. 31, 1864. He was wounded in the left hip in action near Snickers Ford, VA, on July 18, 1864. He was mustered out on Nov. 26, 1864, a Wheeling, WV. At some point he was technically re-enlisted as a member of Co. E, 2nd West Virginia Veteran Volunteer Infantry, which was formed on Dec. 10, 1864 by the consolidation of the 1st and 4th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry regiments. He was finally mustered out on July 16, 1865, at Clarksburg, WV.
