Eddie Yost

Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For eighteen seasons (1944, 1946 to 1962), he played at the third-base position with the Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels. Born Edward Frederick Yost, he attended John Adams High School (Queens) and made his initial imprint in sports during his collegiate years at New York University, where he excelled at basketball and baseball. After signing as an amateur free agent by the Senators, he marked his Major League debut at the age of seventeen with Washington on August 16th, 1944 and played in 7 games that year. He served with the United States Military during the 1945 season and after resuming his career, Yost established himself defensively as a smooth fielding third baseman. At the plate, he was a patient hitter accustom to drawing base-on-balls which led to his high on-base-percentage, thus earning him the nickname "The Walking Man". He led the American League six-times in that statistic (1950, 1952, 1953, 1956 1959 and 1960). In 2,109 regular season games, he compiled 1,863 hits with 1,614 base-on-balls and a .254 lifetime batting average; he earned All-Star status in 1952. Following his retirement as a player, he had coaching stints with the Washington Senators (1963 to 1967), New York Mets (1968 to 1976) and Boston Red Sox (1977 to 1984). While with the Mets, he served on Gil Hodges' staff of the squad that captured the 1969 World Series ("Miracle Mets") and in 1973, he was a part of Yogi Berra's staff of the team that won the National League Pennant that year. He served as an interim manager of the Senators for one game during the 1963 season which resulted in a loss. As a player and coach, Yost totaled 40-years of service on the Major League diamond.
