Pearline was born to Robert McBride and Elizabeth Lancaster, the seventh of fourteen total children. The family moved around quite a bit in her earlier years, finally settling in Logan County, Illinois where Pearline met David Thompson Barnett. They married when she was 20, and she had her first child with him at age 21. They had 8 children, only one of whom, Harvey, died before her death. Her husband passed in 1871 before any of her children were full grown, so she was left to raise them herself. Her children mostly scattered after they became adults, moving Northwest to various states. In the 1900 census, she's listed as living with her second eldest son, Robert, in Covello, Washington. Likely due to her old age, she was placed in a state asylum where she died. Her obituary below;

The remains of Mrs. Pearline Barnett, formerly a resident of Middletown, who died in the hospital for the insane at Bartonville, aged 73 years and some months, were taken to Middletown for interment yesterday. The funeral will be held at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Montgomery, today, May 12, 1909. Rev. T. Lee Knotts will officiate. The interment will be in the Barnes Cemetery. The decedent came to this state in early days with her husband, who died several years ago. Some time ago, she was committed to the asylum at Bartonville, where she spent her last days. She is survived by six sons, Henry of Springfield, John of Dakota, and Arthur, Berry, Robert and Charles whose residence is not known, and one daughter, Mrs. Thomas Montgomery of Middletown.
