Thank You for visiting my Grandmother Caroline. Your visit is very much appreciated. God Bless.

༺⊰❁ Caroline Hon Powell was the daughter of George and Mary Whitehouse Hon, born on November 17, 1820 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, U.S.A. She had three known siblings:
1) Meriel "Mariel" Hon Wise, born September 1, 1812, Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, USA
2) William Hon, born July 17, 1814; and
3) Joseph Hon, born April 20, 1816, Caroline being the youngest.
"George Hon departed this life July 25th in the year of our Lord 1822. In the 47th year of his age." This information was written in Mary Hon's own handwriting within the pages of her Bible. Caroline was 1 year, 8 months, and 8 days old when her father passed to be with the Lord.
After Mary Whitehouse Hon passed away, or was unable to care for the children William H. Douglas was given guardianship of Meriel (Murial), William, Joseph, and Caroline Hon (Haghn) on 12 October 1826.
Note: Meriel is a first name used for daughters in the Hon family line for generations. It is a form of the name Mary. My mother is the last to be named Meriel in the family line.
Caroline married John Briggs Powell on November 5, 1845.
Known children of John Briggs and Caroline Hon Powell:
1) Sarah Jane Powell Buffenbarger, born 1846 in Ohio.
2) Dallas Powell, born 1848 in Ohio. Death unknown. Dallas died young after the 1860 census and may also be buried in Old Columbia Cemetery in Springfield, Ohio. Dallas also has a carved life-like lamb on top of his headstone, the same as Arizona Powell.
3) Mary Powell Elder, born 1851 in Ohio. Death unknown.
Mary married Samuel Elder on June 25, 1873 in Clark County, Ohio, USA. They were married by Rev. George M. Binkley, Methodist Minister. They had twin sons:
1) Samuel Elder, and
2) Arlie Elder, both born March 15, 1876 in Clark County, Ohio, USA, proven by son Samuel's birth records and Arlie's WWI draft card.
Mary's husband Samuel was the son of John Elder and Phebe B. Casey Elder. Samuel passed away due to consumption, attending physician was Van Norman of Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, USA.
4) Melinda Powell, born 1853 in Ohio.
5) William Hon Powell, born 1855 in Ohio.
6) Caroline Powell.
7) Elizabeth "Lizzie" Powell, born 1859 in South Charleston, Clark County, Ohio, USA. Died due to consumption May of 1880 in Greene, Clark County, Ohio, USA. Attending physician Dr. Banwell of South Charleston, Clark County, Ohio, USA.
8) Anna Powell, born 1861 in Ohio. Married Milton L. Dowell on July 17, 1893 in Clark County, Ohio, USA; divorced granted on July 24, 1905 in Jackson, Michigan, USA, for non support.

GG-Grandma Caroline passed away in 1898 in Selma, Ohio. We do not know the month and day of her death.

May Grandma Caroline dwell in the peace and love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Per Google Search Feedback: Arthur St. Clair was the territory's governor until November 1802, when President Thomas Jefferson removed him from office and appointed Charles Willing Byrd, who served the position until Ohio became a state and elected its first governor, Edward Tiffin, on March 3, 1803. George and Mary Hon were thus married prior to November of 1802.

Research on the Governor at the time reveals that Marietta was actually the 1st settlement in Ohio at that time when it was not yet a state and only still a part of the N.W. Territory. The Gov. St. Clair was replaced by another governor in Nov. of 1802, as mentioned above. This means that George and Mary Hon were married prior to Nov. of 1802. Here is a link on some history. George and Mary were part of the first settlers in Marietta. This all matches what Grandma Alice told us that was verbally handed down but records could not be found. So far seems to only be a marriage record. No birth or death records on either one. Likely since the area was so new in being settled. ? Also I wonder if there were some miscarriages as Meriel was the first known living child born to them in 1812. Mary Hon wrote their children in her bible.

At some time George and Mary Whitehouse Hon moved to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, USA, where they had their first known surviving child, Meriel "Mariel" Hon Wise. By the time Caroline Hon Powell was born in 1820 they had moved back to Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, USA.
