Craig English Washington 58, of Lady's Island, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the Medical Univeristy of South Carolina, Charleston.

Funeral Services: 11:00 AM Tuesday. May 8, 2012 at Bethesda Christian Fellowship, St. Helena Island.

He attended the public school system in Beaufort and in 1964, he along with Janelle Drake, integrated Beaufort Elementary School. Craig was a 1971 graduate of Beaufort High School where he was the student body president and a National Merit finalist. He also created an underground newspaper, "The Daily Planet", which was funded by the Peace Corps. Craig received a full academic scholarship to Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, where he graduated in 1975, with a bachelor's degree in history. He later attended USC Law School and Wheelock College where he earned a masters degree in education.

The smooth sounds that emanated from his guitar made Craig an icon in the music community. At age 13, Craig taught himself how to play the guitar and perfected his craft until his death. He played professionally with a number of bands including "The SOS Band" and "Archie Bell and the Drells". He played in numerous venues throughout the Lowcountry. As committed as Craig was to providing entertainment to others, he was more committed to providing music education to any one who wanted to learn how to play the guitar.

Craig also gave generously of his time and talent by playing for many church and local charity benefits throughout the Lowcountry. His job as a substitute teacher with the Beaufort County School District allowed him the opportunity to share his extensive knowledge with young people. His greatest joy was playing with local talented musicians and friends, here in the Lowcountry.

His quick wit and intellectual conversations will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
