Richard Arthur Armstrong, Sr., 85, a lifelong Douglas County resident will be 2:00pm Tuesday, October 16, at the Washington Creek Church of the Brethren, 609 E. 550 Rd, Douglas County, KS. Private family burial in the Worden Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 - service time at the church on Tuesday. Mr. Armstrong died Friday, October 12, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO. He was born December 5, 1926 in Lawrence, KS the first child of Leland Ouray Armstrong and Eleanor Jacqueline Thalman Armstrong. As a child he attended the No. 6 Grade School, graduating 8th grade in 1942. He enlisted in the Army Air corps in 1944 and received his diploma from Liberty Memorial High School in 1945 and later attended the University of Kansas after his discharge. After giving his life to the Lord, he joined the Worden United Methodist Church in 1958. On April 20, 1958, he was united in marriage to Ruby May Heffner by the Rev. Abe Klassen; it being the first marriage performed by him. Dick was a farmer at heart and moved to the country in 1971 after living in Lawrence for 13 years. Dick loved gardening or just tilling the garden for no reason. His shop was a busy place and he was known by the neighbors for his hydraulic inventions that he could attach to anything. In his final months, he enjoyed just sitting in the shop watching TV and during bad weather, working on his electronics in his "man cave". He is survived by his wife, Ruby Armstrong of the home. His daughter, Rheta M. Armstrong Becker and her husband Kevin L. of Olathe, KS., His son, Richard A. Armstrong, JR and wife Susan of Neosho, MO. Seven grandchildren; Lance Becker and wife Jessica; Grant & Blake Becker , Cassandra Armstrong Carnahan & husband Justin, Shayla, Roman & Elizabeth Armstrong and 4 great-grandchildren; Madison & Kaedence Becker, Clara Armstrong & Connor Carnahan.
