Ray was a twin of Roy Francis, the seventh and eighth chidren born to Lewis L and Florence E Hamm Guthery, in Kansas City, Missouri. After attaining adulthood Ray became a meat cutter and supervisor for A&P Market in Saint Joseph, Missouri. He married his wife Rheta Mae Cundiff and to this union three children were born: Ron, Jayne and Jo.
