Started and finished life as a farmer but in between he traveled the far northwest as Indian inspector.

In 1907 he attended the Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston and in 1908 The Friends' General Conference in Winona Lake, Indiana.

Married 18 Sep 1862. They were the parents of Rebecca Thomas (1864-1924), Elizabeth Porter (1867-1901) and Martha Thomas (1870-1894).
