Robert L. Almond, Jr., of Spartanburg, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 in Nashville, TN. He was born August 12, 1927, in Macon, GA, graduated from Columbus High School and the University of Georgia where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Bob enjoyed a long career in research and sales in industrial textiles retiring from Hoechst-Celanese in 1988. He was a popular presenter for many years at Clemson's Non-Woven Textiles Consortium. He was active at St. Paul United Methodist Church as a Sunday School teacher and Methodist Men's organizer, in Toastmasters, and the Spartanburg Men's Garden Club where he served as President as well as Chairman of several committees including the future of Hatcher Garden, Landscape Evaluation, and Kid Fest. He also served as President of the Blue Ridge Region of Men's Garden Clubs of America. He was an avid volunteer at Hatcher Garden and helped develop the Harold Hatcher Memorial Monument, the amphitheater, and the annual container plant sale.

Bob was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Thelma "Penny" Almond. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart, Mary Helen Denson of Nashville, TN; his son, Robert L. Almond III and his wife, Mary, of Roanoke, VA; also two adored granddaughters, Callie and Rebecca Almond of Roanoke; his extended family, David and Catherine Denson and children of Nashville; and Joe and Jennifer Denson and children of Mobile, AL, along with special cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, April 18, 2009 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Spartanburg conducted by the Rev. Frank E. Lybrand and the Rev. William K. Coble, with visitation following.
