John W Jones was born on March 21, 1826 in London, England and was baptized on April 9, 1826, at St. John, Horselydown in southeast London. He immigrated to America through Canada with his mother and brother William in the 1850s. He then moved to Wisconsin in about 1854 and settled in the Fish Creek Valley, LaCrosse County.
On April 19, 1855 John Jones married Mary Jones (from another of the many Jones families that immigrated to the US). They had eight children of which seven survived.
.John W was one of the early pioneer settlers in the Big Creek Valley. He helped build the first saw mill on Robinson's Creek, and assisted in building the first railroad depot and grist mill at Bangor. John worked as a carpenter until about 1858. He served also as assessor for the area.
John W and Mary Jones lived in Rockland until about 1869 when they purchased a 360 acre farm in Portland Township from Susannah. Susannah had purchased the farm from a man named Rowlands in 1867 per the deed recorded in Sparta.
John W was prominent in the affairs of his community. He held several local offices in the towns of Bangor and Portland, including 15 years as Justice of the Peace, and several terms as town clerk. He was known as an advocate of arbitration in disputes of all causes that came before him.
John was described as an "active, capable and progressive citizen, intelligent, upright and greatly respected" in the History of Monroe Country which was published in 1912.
The home of John W Jones served as the 3rd Post Office in the area. The 1st was at Leon, 2nd at Hazen Corner, and 3rd at the Jones farm. John W served as the postmaster. Mail was brought from LaCrosse once a week at first, and later twice.
In February 1897, John W retired from farming and moved to Sparta, Wisconsin where he died at about 1 am on December 10, 1900 from an inflammation of the bowels caused by cancer of the rectum.
