Sister was the oldest of eleven children of Joseph, who was born in Westfalen,Germany and Juliana Vogel Kluthe, who was born in Tirsteangel,Posen,Germany. Her parents were some of the earliest settlers in Olean. Her father had obtained homestead land and they lived in a "soddy" for the early years of their marriage.Her sister Barbara became Sister Victoria and her brother Anton became Father Anthony. Her birth name was Mary.She entered the cloisters in 1895.
