Son of Calvin Chastain & Martha Jane Garrett. He is listed on the 1860 Census in Wolf Bayou, Healing Springs Township, Independence County, Arkansas in the household of his father Calvin Chastain and step mother Cynthia Dill. He was age 11, and had attended school within the year. They were living next door to young Calvin's grandparents Benjamin Chastain and Nancy Hooper.

Calvin married Mariah Louise Jackson on August 6, 1874. He married Minnie Lake on February 27, 1887.

Arkansas Confederate Pension #19002 Calvin F. Chastain. Company C, Smith's Missouri Cavalry. Application year: 1905. Comments: approved. See Chastain, Calvin 15685.

Besides any prior service, at the close of the war Calvin appears on the roster of Company G, 10th Arkansas Cavalry (Witt's) as C. F. Chasteen, with his father C. Chasteen. He belonged to the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas under Brig. Gen. M. Jeff Thompson, which surrendered May 11, 1865. Calvin was paroled June 5, 1865 at Jacksonport, Arkansas. Age 16 yrs.; eyes Grey; hair Dark. Complexion Dark; height 5 feet 3 inches. Where born: Georgia. He had enlisted at Batesville, Arkansas on an unspecified date.
