Obituary

Lois Stewart passed away Friday, October 12, 2012, in Kent, Ohio.

She was the sixth red headed child of Arthur and Fannie Humphrey Flowers, born on a farm in Watertown, Ohio. Lois was very musically inclined.

The Flowers family was descended from pioneers to Washington County from 1806. The older children attended the country school in Watertown. In 1916, the parents sold their farm and moved with their younger children to Edinburg, Ohio to be closer to centralized schooling and the new state normal school. They settled on a 54 acre farm a mile west of Edinburg when Lois was in the second grade.

The years went by and Lois participated in 4-H and graduated in 3 years from Edinburg High School in 1926. She went on to Ravenna High School in 1927, and entered Kent Normal School Elementary Teacher Training in September of 1927. She graduated in 1929 and obtained a teaching position for second grade and music in the lower grades in Brimfield in 1929. She taught there four years then went to first grade at Garrettsville for two years, and one year at Lordstown.

On April 5, 1936, Lois and Chauncey Maurice Stewart were married at the Edinburg United Church. They moved to Warren, Ohio and worked there during WWII for 15 years until they purchased their farm in Brimfield. There, Lois worked at Twin Coach as a bookkeeper, while CM was a machinist. They entered into the activities in Brimfield, joining the Methodist Church, the Grange, the Memorial House Association, the Garden Club, the Eastern Star OES #53, and the Kent Presbyterian Church. At her death, Lois was a member of the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church in Akron.

Lois did not have any relatives living in this area except CM's nephew Charles Miller and family in Stow. Numerous nephews and nieces live in the Columbus area and Washington County. In recent months, Lois has been cared for by her good neighbors, Nick and Phyllis Battaglia, friends Lela Irving and others.

Lois' interests were in music and history with an extensive library of Biblical books. She will be remembered as the recent teacher of the adult Bible class of the Brimfield Methodist Church.

Per her wishes there will be no visitation and funeral services officiated by Pastor David Ballert will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Final resting place will be Restland Cemetery in Brimfield.
