Baseball pioneer, politician. Member of the Knickerbocker Baseball Club, helping found the club and serving as its vice president in 1845. Helped create the games first rules. Umpired amatuer baseball games in New York City. Served in the California State Assembly in 1862 and 1871. Named the Register of the General Land Office of the United States in 1876, serving until 1886.
