Birmingham Tips Hat To Couple of Her Foremost Citizens
by Miriam Hill and Orlean Lackey, News Staff Writers

Birmingham tipped its hat today to two of its foremost citizens. They are Mrs. N. J. Evans, of 919 Coosa Street, who is 91 years young today, and Mrs. A. M. Archibald, 2131 South 15th Avenue, who was 91 years young yesterday.

Although not so well in recent months, Mrs. Evans is celebrating her birthday anniversary in high fashion. Yesterday, she motored to Tuscaloosa with relatives for a gala family reunion. Today she was honored at a family dinner at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. Frank Pettus. The birthday menu, of course, was topped by a beautiful cake.

A NATIVE of Hale County, Mrs. Evans came to Birmingham after her marriage in 1881. She remembers vividly the construction of 26 houses that marked the beginning of the East Birmingham section. In fact, she still lives in one today.

She recalls, too, the city's old "dummy line" days. Her husband was an engineer on one of those lines. There were only three railroads here, and the L. & N. ticket office was nothing more than a boxcar.

The only reason Mrs. Evans isn't the present owner of the site of the Brown-Marx building, she muses, "is because my husband couldn't foresee how a frog pond could ever be worth $250."

Celebrating with Mrs. Evans are her sons and daughters, 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Her children: Mrs. Lillian Norton, Mrs. Lottie M. Tennant and Mrs. J. Frank Pettus, of Birmingham; W. L. Evans, Orlando, Fla., and P. P. Evans, Columbus, Ohio.
