Deceased Name: Betty Lone (Brown) Tenbrink
Betty Lone (Brown) Tenbrink, 84, of Stillwater died on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008 in Stillwater. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Father Kenneth J. Harder officiating. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Strode Funeral Home. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Family will greet friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at Strode Funeral Home. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She was born the fourth of five children on Sept. 18, 1923 in Dodge City, Kan., to William Elmer Brown and Mae Pearl (Sherwood) Brown. She attended public schools in Dodge City and graduated from high school in 1941.
She worked several jobs in Dodge City including those as a waitress and cashier before moving to Las Angeles with her older sister, Helen. The sisters supported themselves during the war years by driving troop transport trucks. After the war, Betty returned to Dodge City.
In 1950 she met and married Everett William "Bud" Tenbrink. He preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 1975. The two lived and farmed a wheat, cattle and pork operation west of Dodge City. She and her husband had four children, Richard, David, Sharon and Rodney.
In 1964 the entire family moved to Stillwater, where they opened Griff's Hamburger Restaurant across from Stillwater High School. Betty also worked for Oklahoma State University as a bookkeeper in the financial aid office and later in architecture services. She retired from OSU in 1986.
For the next several years she and her sisters, Helen and Phyllis, would travel extensively. In 2003, after the death of both sisters, she became disabled but wished to remain in her own home. Her oldest son Richard moved into her home and became her primary care giver. At the time of her death she was the only living member of her birth family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, David William Tenbrink; and one daughter, Sharon Louise Tenbrink.
She is survived by two sons, Richard "Rick" Tenbrink and his wife Juli of Stillwater, and Rodney "Rod" Tenbrink and his wife Barbara of Las Vegas; six grandchildren, Sandra (Tenbrink) Peterson and her husband Al of Washington, D.C.; Timothy Tenbrink of Washington; Brian Tenbrink of St. Louis, Mo.; Stephanie Tenbrink of Washington; Brooke Tenbrink of Las Vegas; and Bryce Tenbrink of Las Vegas; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. She is also survived by special friends, Harold and Kathryn Tucker of Stillwater.
