Below is an excert from the Plattsburgh Sentinel Annual for the Year 1893, W. Lansing & Son, Plattsburgh, New York, 1893:
"Dr. Francis J. D'Avignon
ANOTHER OF THE DISTINGUISHED PATRIOTS OF 1837. IMPRISONED- CONDEMNED TO DEATH- MARVELOUS ESCAPE- REFUGEE TO THE UNITED STATES - U.S. SURGEON IN THE WAR OF THE REBELLION - PRISONER AT LIBBY PRISON. Nearly all the older inhabitants of our Adirondack country can recall the cheerful, benevolent countenance, the foreign accent, the polished manners, the sparkling wit, the unvarying kindness, patience and skill of their pioneer physician and surgeon, Francis Joseph D'Avignon. Dr. D'Avignon was born August 5th, 1807, at Point Oliver, Lower Canada. His parents, names were Victoire VauDaudigue and Joseph D'Avignon. He was a physician and surgeon of rare skill and had a wide practice in Canada previous to the Canadian rebellion, in which he took a very active part. He was twice imprisoned, and the last time sentenced to be executed, but marvelously escaped. As a successful practitioner at Ausable Forks (New York) he is well remembered. His brave and faithful service as a surgeon in the Union Army are a matter of record. He died at Ausable Forks at the age of 59 years. Dr. F. J. D'Avignon, of Ausable Forks, is his son."

D'Avignon was commissioned as a Captain and Regimental Surgeon in the New York Militia on 9/19/1856 with a date of rank back to 8/26/1856, in the 32nd Regiment, 14th Brigade, 4th Division. On 9/7/1859 he was promoted to the rank of major. During the Civil War, D'Avignon served as a Surgeon with the 96th New York Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted on 11/25/1861. D'Avignon discharged on 3/14/1865. He applied for a veteran's pension on 5/25/1866, application #108792.

Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Post 379 in Jay, Essex County, New York, was named in his honor.

The 1850 US Census reports that D/Avignon is living in Black Brook, Clinton County, New York with the following family members in the home:
Francis D Avignon M 43 Canada
Elizabeth A. Avignon F 31 New York
John E. Avignon M 5 New York
Sidney F. Avignon M 3 New York
Moses M. Mitivier M 17 Canada
Hannah Windell F 38 New York
Samuel Y. Fitzgerald M 26 New York
**Note that the census taker erroneously recorded the last name as being Avignon instead of D'Avignon or the more common spelling of Davignon. It is recorded that Moses Mitiver is at school and more likely than not the child of a friend in Canada. Ms. Windell is probably a servant and Samuel Fitzgerald is recorded as being a physician.
