Mary was born near Versailles in Woodford County, KY. She was the daughter of Dudley Mitchum and his wife Susannah Allen. She married John Bowman on November 27, 1817.
Mary and John had four sons: Abraham Hite (1819-1877), Dudley Mitchum (1820-1901), John Bryan (1824-1891) and David Bryan Bowman (1826-1829). The family bible records include an adopted daughter, Joanna M. Steele, born Dec 25, 1826. She was the daughter of Mary's sister Elizabeth, who died in 1828. However, Joanna was not mentioned in John Bowman's will.
