Mustered in with Machine Gun Troop, Squadron A Cavalry, for service on the Mexican border ( Camp McAllen, TX ), June 30, 1916. Squadron A Cavalry returned to New York City, December 23, 1916 and mustered out of Mexican border service, December 28, 1916, New York City.

World War 1, Squadron A Cavalry, was assigned to Camp Wadsworth, SC, and reorganized for the World War as the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, 27th Division. He was assigned to Company C.

Commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Signal Corps, Nov. 28, 1917 and promoted 1st Lieutenant, Signal Corps, August 3, 1918. He was assigned to the 304th Field Signal battalion, 79th Division Fort Meade, MD. The 304th Field Signal Battalion deployed to Europe, June 30, 1918. He saw extensive combat in France. Returning to the States, May 26, 1919, aboard the USS Princess Matoika and discharged from the service May 30, 1919, Camp Dix, NJ.
