DIED AT THE HOME OF JOHN WOELFEL
Another of the early settlers of this section of the state has been called to his Maker. On Tuesday evening, Feb. 24th, John Bushman died at the home of his son-in-law, John Woelfel, who resides on the Bennett road adjacent to this city, at the age of seventy-two years, two months and twelve days.

John Bushman was born in West Phaeling, Germany, Dec. 12, 1841. In 1844 he came to America with his parents, Frank and Gertrude Bushman, who located at Milwaukee where they remained until 1847 and then moved to Manitowoc County locating at School Hill in the town of Meeme, in the then dense wilderness. He assisted his father in clearing the land and in 1862 he was married at St. Nazianz to Rosalie Schnell and they began carving out a farm home for themselves. They continued to operate the farm until his wife and companion died some four and a half years ago. A year later his health began to fail and the old homestead farm was turned over to his son, Anton. His health did not seem to improve and that fatal malady, cancer of the stomach, developed. After his retirement from the farm he spent his time visiting with his children in various parts of Wisconsin and in January returned from a visit to his sons and daughter in Clark and Taylor counties to visit his daughters at this place.

He was a man of strong character and previous to his affliction took an active part in farm work, being able to do more that the ordinary man because of his strength and robust build. He was successful in all his undertakings and accumulated considerable of the world's good. He was a kind hearted man, devoted to his family and interested in their success. He was an obliging neighbor, a true friend and was esteemed by everyone who knew him. He was a devout member of the Catholic church and when his health permitted was a regular attendant at the services.

He was the father of twelve children, Frank, Joseph, Anton of Meeme, Henry, Peter and Mrs. Mary Vandorske of Greenwood, Clark County, Andrew of Rib Lake, Taylor County, John, Misses Rosa and Anna of California, Mrs. John Woelfel and Mrs. Gust Woelfel of Chilton town, all of whom survive him. He is also survived by sixty grandchildren.

The remains were taken to his old home in the town of Meeme on Friday forenoon, where they will lay in state until Monday morning when they funeral will be held from Holy Trinity Catholic church of which he was a member for many years. Rev. Fr. Michael will celebrate Requiem Mass.
