Ida was the second daughter and second child of three children born to James Robert BROOKS and Melinda Ann LINGO. Their first daughter, Mattie, died as an infant. And Ida was nine years old when her brother, Alfred was born.

In 1900 3-year-old Ida was living with her parents at 214 North 2nd in Temple, Bell Co., Texas.

Grandad Brooks (Ida's brother) told me "she was raised on a farm near Cairo, Randolph Co., Missouri. Her mother, Linnie, called her "Mary Ida Mae Rena Betty Hattie Belle Dina" supposedly the names of her aunts."

In 1910 13-year-old Ida is on the census with her parents and younger brother living in Jackson Township, Randolph Co., Missouri.

21 APR 1911 and 15 SEP 1911 there were articles in the Moberly, Missouri paper about Ida attending Howard Payne College in Fayette, Missouri.

15 DEC 1912 Ida was sixteen and her father gave his permission for her to marry Willie C. WALKER in Huntsville, Randolph Co., Missouri. According to the Marriage License, Willie and Ida were from Cairo, Randolph Co., Missouri and Willie was over 21. According to the census Willie was 29.

Grandad Brooks said that Ida "lived in Pocatello, Idaho after her marriage to Willie Walker." Willie's sister Ella (WALKER) POLSON was living in Twin Falls Co., Idaho on the 1910, 1920, and 1930 census.

Willie and Ida had one daughter Elnor Mae WALKER born 9 MAR 1915 in Missouri.

Willie and Ida were divorced between 1915 and 1919

Ida married Clarence Albert OYER 8 SEP 1919 in Ontario, Malhuer Co., Oregon. They didn't have any children, but Clarence adopted Elnor Mae WALKER. And they both adopted Ida's nephew Edward Dana BROOKS.

On the 1920 census Ida, Clarence, and Elnor Mae are living with Ida's parents, brother, and grandmother in Jacksonville Township, Randolph Co., Missouri.

On the 1930 census and city directories for 1932 through 1935 they are living at 101 North Lawn, Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri. In 1930 lodger Richard D. CHAMBERS is living with them.

On the 1940 census 9 year-old Eddie, Elnor Mae and her husband Elmer RYAN, and Richard and Ralph CHAMBERS (cousins) are also living with Clarence and Ida at 101 North Lawn.

"Aunt Ida" ran a dance studio on the third floor of her home on Lawn. I spent time every week with her growing up. She had big brown eyes, a ready smile, and long black hair that she pinned up every morning with bobby pins in curls all over her head. She sewed the dance costumes for us... lots of tulle, velvet, and sequins, and she would sit on the front row coaching us to "smile" and really sell our routines. I can still see her dancing and singing along with us, to encourage us. She would take me shopping at Montgomery ("Monkey") Wards basement, and would buy me coats and shoes and clothes. She'd take me to Blanchard's for a coke and a hamburger. She bought me dolls, brought me souvenirs from her vacations, and took me rock hunting, for geodes to put in the garden. She had lots of flowers and a rock garden all around her yard especially on the St John Ave side. I remember her candy dish always had licorice and horehound candy. We would visit, watch TV, and play in her family room in the basement almost every Saturday. She always had chihuahuas. And she had beautiful dishes and glassware on display. My mom tells me that when I was a toddler, I used to beg to go home with Aunt Ida and Uncle Clarence.

She died of cancer at age 69.
