Born in Abbeville South Carolina, the son of Nathan and Martha (Pucket)Calhoun, His D.P.'s grandfather was William Calhoun.
D.P. attended medical school in Charleston, S. C. graduating in 1842. He settled in Catahoula Parish in 1847 and began practicing at Trinity. He purchased 250 acres Southwest of town and began planting. Later he owned 1700 acres of which 350 acres were under cultivation called Peachland plantation.
