CLYDE H. ATER

Clyde H. Ater was born in Roscoe, Texas, November 2, 1917, to Horace and Elizabeth Ater. He and his parents lived in Sweetwater, Texas; and they moved to a farm south of Roscoe when Clyde was about 7 years old, and his sister, Nina Mae was about 4 years old.
After leaving high school Clyde attended Draughan's Business School in Abilene, Texas, and he studied accounting. While in that school he met Shirley Ford, and they married in 1937. In 1942 Clyde and Shirley mved to Portland, Oregon, where he worked in the shipyards until he was drafted to the Army in 1944. He served in the occupation forces in Germany. In 1946 the family returned to Roscoe where Clyde began farming. By then Clyde and Shirley had two daughters, Jimmie Rae and Judith Lynn.
Clyde and Shirley became active members of the community and were especially involved in working with the Church of Christ, where he served as deacon for several years. Clyde received awards for his conservation farming practices and was named farmer of the year in the late 1960's. He served on the Board of the Texas Bank and Trust, and was on the Board of the H&H Feed Lot in Roscoe. He and Shirley traveled abroad extensively and developed many friends across the nation.
Clyde loved his church, his family and his friends. He was active in furthering education for youngsters going to Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. He established a scholarship fund at ACU so that he could help young people achieve their scholastic goals. He contributed support, also, to Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas. He was an avid supporter of the Roscoe Plowboys, was a member of the Roscoe Lions Club and he worked to support the Volunteer Fire Department of Roscoe. He was an ardent fisherman and enjoyed deep sea fishing. He was also an excellent bridge player.
Predeceasing Clyde was Shirley, his wife and partner for 71 years; his parents Horace and Lizzie Ater; his grandsons Parrish and Dale Berryhill; his grandson John Stephenson; his granddaughter-in-law Martha Stephenson; and his son-in-law Tom Fraley.
He is survived by his daughters Jimmie and her husband George Plunkett; Judy and her husband Paul Kester; grandchildren Becky and her husband Mike Smith; Matthew Stephenson; Debby and her husband Don McCormick; and Ann and her husband Rick Simpson; his sister Nina and Clark Brown; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren; great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be Sunday, 2:00 PM October 14, 2012 at Church of Christ in Roscoe, Texas, with Royce Clay and Dan Boren officiating, Interment will follow at the Roscoe Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Joe McIntire, Don Martin, Roy Lee McMillan, Jerry Don Riggs, Guy Lucas, Johnny Pepper, Harold Duvall.
There will be a family visitation held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater, Texas from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
