Mary Elizabeth (Bierer) Hartman, 106, formerly of West Melbourne, Florida, died Monday, August 7, 2023, at the family residence in Lexington, Kentucky.

She was born July 18, 1917, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, daughter of Elmer Bierer and Rose Buttermore Bierer.

Mrs. Hartman graduated from Uniontown High School in 1935, and she married her high school sweetheart, Charles J. "Bugs" Hartman in 1936. After graduating from high school, Mrs. Hartman went to work at a department store in Uniontown.

In 1941, Mr. and Mrs. Hartman's only child, Donald, was born.

While Mrs. Hartman's husband was serving with the United States Army in the European Theatre during World War II, she saved up enough money for the family to purchase a home on Connellsville Street in Uniontown when her husband returned from the war.

In 1953, the Hartmans moved to Homestead, Florida, where they opened a radio and television shop. In the late 1950s, Mrs. Hartman went to work as the bookkeeper for Homestead's weekly newspaper. Later she went to work at James Archer Smith Hospital in Homestead. She retired from the hospital in 1977.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartman bought a condo in 1989 in West Melbourne, Florida. Mrs. Hartman was an avid walker and enjoyed going to the swimming pool at Greenwood Manor. She attended church at First United Methodist in Melbourne.

Mrs. Hartman last visited her condo in June 2020. Mrs. Hartman's son and daughter-in-law took care of her in the final years of her life in Lexington, Kentucky.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Hartman was preceded in death by her brother, Earl Bierer.

Mrs. Hartman is survived by: Her son, Donald Hartman (Carolyn) of Lexington, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Hilary Hartman (Robin) of Ketchikan, Alaska, Hope Hartman (Denny) of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Chas Hartman (Jeanne) of Lexington, Kentucky; and four great-grandchildren, Bailey, Rebecca, Isabella and Denshin.

There will not be a funeral for Mrs. Hartman. Her ashes will eventually be buried in the family plot at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
