John Schneider Gretzinger, was born June 3, 1890 in Austria and later moved with his parents to Germany. His mother was a Gretzinger, who married Richard Schneider. When my father was 17, his half brother Joseph, who had moved to the USA came back to visit, (Luckily for all of his decedent's), Joseph then asked John to come back with him to Wisconsin. Upon embarking in the United States, Joe Gretzinger asked John to register as John Gretzinger rather than John Schneider, he said "because you're my brother and I want us to have the same last name", as we know he did.
John and Matilda Peterson were married on October 28th, 1912. They settled near Crandon on a property with acreage that already had a house and some outbuildings. John cleared some land, removing trees for lumber, dynamiting stumps, and removing rocks. Picking rocks was an annual event for the Gretzinger children, who would sometimes have to take a couple of days off from school to help. John built a nice barn, and it was told they had a barn dance in the hay loft after it was completed. By 1920, the family has grown to include children Dorothy, Roy, and Earl.
John and Matilda lived in rural Forest county near Argonne for approximately 30 years. Their ten children (Dorothy, Roy, Earl, Ann, Ruth, Frank, Delores, Matilda (Tillie), John and William) and eventual grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept their lives pretty busy with family celebrations and the daily life a large family farm. (The only known tragedy occurring when Matilda and John lost their son, Roy, on July 4, 1955, when he drowned in Lake Metonga during a July 4th celebration.)
In 1942, John and Matilda returned to Clintonville, eventually making their last move to Shawano a few years before Matilda's death in 1961. They are buried together in Graceland Cemetery in Clintonville.
