Published Saturday, Feb 26, 2000; Updated Apr 17, 2013

Frank Hartzell Schmadeka, 93, a longtime Grangeville farmer, died of causes related to age Thursday morning at Lewiston Rehabilitation and Care Center.

He was born Dec. 24, 1906, at Grangeville to John Wesley and Arminta Johnson Schmadeka.

His grandfather, a homestead farmer, donated half the land for the original townsite of the city of Grangeville.

He attended Sunnyside School north of Grangeville until the age of 15, when his father died, and he became responsible for operating the family farm.

Schmadeka married Wilma Alene Webb Nov. 9, 1930, at Grangeville. The couple lived and farmed in areas north of Grangeville. Most of the years were spent raising grain and livestock on the Schmadeka family homestead site.

In 1990, the family farm was designated one of Idaho's Century farms having been farmed by the Schmadeka family for more than 100 years.

During World War II, the family moved to Portland for a short time and he worked on government housing.

In 1976, the couple retired from farming and moved to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley to be near their sons.

They lived at Evergreen Estates, Wedgewood Terrace and Lewiston Care and Rehabilitation Center.

He was a charter member of and active in the Grangeville Senior Citizens Center. He and his wife enjoyed attending senior citizens luncheons in various Idaho and Lewis County towns.

They enjoyed listening and dancing to music of the Old Time Fiddlers.

He was a member of the Grangeville Christian Church and later attended the Clarkston First Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Arthur, Everett, and Clyde Schmadeka; six sisters, Myrtle Chase, Elsie Meyers, Sadie Keeler, Thelma Workman, Cassie Stillwell and Iva Curtis; and one great-grandson.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville. The Revs. Marvin Dixon of Clarkston and Harold Gott of Grangeville will officiate.

The family suggests memorial gifts to the Senior Citizens' Center, County Road, Grangeville, or to the Grangeville Christian Church, 402 W. South 1st, Grangeville.

Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home of Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.
