Son of Amos and Lucy Wylie Prentice, his birth was recorded at Griswold, Connecticut. After the death of his father the family removed to Norwich where he remained the balance of his life. He died at his home there after a short illness.
He started as a clerk and eventually became senior partner of a hardware store formerly called John Breed & Company, then Breed, Prentice & Company, and later still the A W Prentice & Company.
He served as president of the Norwich Savings Society and was also president and a director of the Thames Fire Insurance Company. He was both a Representative and Senator in the State Legislature, a county commissioner, and Mayor of Norwich.
