Norman J. Cone Sr.
Services for Mr. Norman J. Cone, Sr., were held Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Minden. Burial followed at Gardens of Memory, officiated by Dr. Randy Hales.
Mr. Cone was born July 16, 1906, in Hamburg, Ark., to Amos R. and Eula Maude Powell Cone. He attended the Consolidated Fountain Hill School, and Monticello A & M College, 1925-1927, working his way through school milking cows in the dairy, and doing research on breeding and nutrition. He joined the 106th Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft "B" Battery in Monticello.
He was baptized in the Flat Creek Baptist Church in 1922, and was raised to master mason on November 4, 1927 and advanced through York Rite. Bodies of Royal Arch and Commandry, serving in all stations of these. He was also a member of El Karubah Shrine Temple.
He was employed by Bastrop Paper Mill in September 1927, later purchased by International Paper Co.
He married Alma Courtney Cone on July 25, 1928, and had one son, Norman J. Cone, Jr. on October 3, 1929. In 1937, he was transferred to Georgetown, S.C., in the position of tour foreman.
He was an avid pilot of his 1939 Piper Club.
In August 1945, after 19 years of papermaking, the family moved to Minden, built a building at 221 E. Union and opened a Purina franchise known as Cone & Johnson Farm Supply. He retired in early 1980.
He served two terms as a city councilman from 1954 through 1962.
Alma Cone died in April 1985. Gladys Monzingo became his wife in 1990. She was 83 and he was 84 years of age. They were members of the First Baptist Church until they wed, and then transferred to Emmanual Baptist Church.
He is survived by wife, Gladys; one son, N.J., Jr. and his wife Erna; one brother, Kermit Cone of Springhill; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
