In 1909 he went to work at Standard Cleaning Co.
On February 20, 1917 he married Ethel Mae Bloss in Chillicothe. They had two sons, Richard J and Louis Franklin.
In 1922 he purchased the cleaning business and named it Austin Cleaners. He sold the business in 1937.
In 1942 he moved to Detroit where he purchased a tailoring business.
He was a member of the Methodist Church.
