Enlisted as a 22 yr. old resident of Urbana, Benton Co., Ia. on June 24, 1861 (with his 21 yr. old brother Edmund D. Cox) in Co. G, 5th Iowa Infantry. In Aug. 1862 two other brothers, 21 yr. old William Alexander and 25 yr. old Henry, would also join Co. G. These three brothers would all be captured at the Battle of Mission Ridge, Tn. on Nov.25,1863 and perish in the prison camp at Andersonville, Ga. Listed as left sick at the hospital at Syracuse, Mo. on Nov.25, 1861 on Co. return dated Dec.31, 1861. Promoted 6th Corp. Jan.1, 1862. Discharged for disability Feb. 13, 1862 at Syracuse, Mo. Evidently married in Iowa in 1863 to Martha J. and has five children. Martha died in 1875 and Milton remarries in 1880 in Nebraska to Julia L. and produces two more children with her. He is listed as living at De Witt, Neb. in the 1897 Veteran Roster. Listed on the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Federal Censuses as living in De witt, Saline Co., Neb. On the 1930 census Julia L. is listed as 75 yrs. old and widowed.
