In the 1850 Federal Census, Robert S. Akin is listed "under" the children of Phineas & Virginia (Cary) Akin. There are two individuals listed in this way and are more than likely "not" the children of Phineas & Virginia (Cary) Akin. Both Robert S. Akin, 11 yrs old and William C. Akin who is 7 yrs old.

William C. Akin is actually William O. Akin, my g-g grandfather, who Phineas and Virginia (Cary) Akin took into their household after William O. Akin lost his mother, sometime just before the 1850 Census, perhaps as early as 1848. So, I believe that Robert S. Akin to be, very likely, the older brother of William. The father of William O. Akin is James W. Akin, who is the younger brother of Phineas. When James W. Akin lost his wife abt 1848-1850, he had several children that were taken in by different Akin families who were living close by in Cumberland County, KY. Phineas and James W. Akin lived next door to each other. By 1852, James W. Akin married a Mary Ann Lawson and the family was reunited by the 1860 census, but by that time, Robert S. Akin was on the 1860 census of Robert William Norris and his wife Hannah (Akin) Norris, working on their farm as a laborer, then he married Bettie Bouldin by 1861-1862, possibly in an effort to avoid having to enter the War. So, Robert S. Akin and William O. Akin were likely brothers.

During, prior, and after the 1860's time period of the Civil War, many of the Akin Family of Cumberland Co., KY departed the area, some stayed. There was disagreement among the family members regarding sentiments of the pending War and sentiments after the War, depending on what side they supported during the War.

Phineas and his family left Cumberland County after 1850 and are unaccounted for during the 1860 - 1870 period, although, I believe they were in Missouri by that time. By 1800, Virginia (Cary) Akin can be found in the 1880 census in Cooper Co., Missouri. Phineas, however, apparently died somewhere else in Missouri according to the obituary of Virginia (Cary) Akin.

James W. Akin and his new spouse, Mary Ann Lawson, left for Iowa after 1860, and lived there for over 20 years but later, about 1886, James W. Akin, his spouse, Mary, James daughter, Nancy Ellen and children, joined William O. Akin, James's son, in Barry Co., MO, where James W. Akin & Mary died just a few years afterwards.

Robert S. Akin married abt 1861-1862 to Elizabeth Laura Bouldin aka Bettie or Betsy. Bettie was b.18 May 1839 in Cumberland Co., KY & d.9 Feb 1924 in Van Alstyne, Grayson Co., TX. Marriage records for this time period in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY were, unfortunately, destroyed by a Courthouse fire in 1933.

From 1882 to 1889, it is entirely possible that the family moved into Tennessee, possibly taking residence there for a short period of time, en-route for Texas where they knew other Akin Family had headed during the Civil War period.

Robert and Betty had 9 children. They were:

1. William Clark Akin b.28 Apr 1868 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.6 Jan 1947 in Lone Oak, Hunt Co., TX.
Married: Martha J. Bailey abt 1896.

2. Oleander Herschel Akin b.18 Aug 1870 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.13 Jul 1937 in Lubbock, Lubbock Co., TX.
Married: Minnie C. Wilson on 8 Jan 1895 in Grayson Co., TX

Note: On the Death Certificate of O. H. Akin, his spouse, Minnie, reported 1867 as his birth date, the gravestone is certainly incorrect listing 1876. Most likely he was born in 1870.

3. Nancy Susan Akin b.20 Jul 1872 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.11 Feb 1948 in Fannin Co., TX
Married: Isaiah Z. Bailey on 9 Aug 1894 in Grayson Co., TX.

4. Laura Ruth Akin b.Feb 1874 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.26 Feb 1950 in Slaton, Lubbock Co., TX.
Married: Thomas Logan Reed on 23 May 1907 in Grayson Co., TX

5. J. R. Akin b.Feb 1876 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & died Feb 1876 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY.

6. Florence Wicklif Akin aka Wick b.8 Jun 1877 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.3 Jan 1953 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX.
Married: Mattie Jane Roper on 4 Mar 1911 in Grayson Co., TX

7. Joseph Akin b.abt 1878 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.Unknown

8. Edd Bob Akin aka Eddy b.8 Oct 1879 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.Unknown
Married: Bertie Unknown abt 1901 in Grayson Co., TX.

9. Henry Finis Akin b.22 Jun 1882 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.31 Dec 1937 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX.
Married: Julia Ann Hestand on 25 Oct 1903 in Grayson Co., TX.
