Leonard Millslagle

Leonard Winfield Millslagle, 85, of Caywood Road, Marietta died Feb. 22, 2002, at his home on Duckworth Farms.

He was born on Sept. 1, 1916, a son of the late Joseph and Mary Sparks Millslagle at Sandhill and grew up in the Reno community.

On July 18, 1936, he married Selma Elsie Seyler, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his two daughters, Darlene Matthews and her husband Bill of Naperville, Ill., and Shirley Duckworth of Marietta; three grandsons, John Edmund Duckworth and his wife Kathy, Mark Leonard Duckworth and his wife Rebecca Jean of Marietta and and James Matthews of Naperville; one granddaughter, Stefanie Duckworth Nelson and her husband Rob of Marietta; four great-grandsons, Zachary, Spencer and Derek Duckworth and Luke Nelson of Marietta; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lorena Roach, Mae Merideth and Edith Reider; one brother, Herman Millslagle; and his son-in-law, Carl Duckworth.

Mr. Millslagle had been employed by New System Bakery and Nichols Bakery for many years. He later owned and operated several Gulf service stations around Marietta. After retirement, he and his wife owned and trained standard bred horses. They raced for many years on the Ohio fair circuit and at raceways in Ohio and Pennsylvania. He could often be found at The Washington County Fairgrounds watching the horses train.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Harmar Lodge 390 of the Royal Order of Masons, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, United States Trotting Association, Ohio Harness Horseman Association and Washington County Harness Horseman Association.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home, Marietta, the Rev. Charles and the Rev. Karen Martindell officiating. Burial in EastLawn Cemetery. Visitation is from noon Monday until the hour of services.
