In 1900 he and his parents and two siblings lived in a house they owned, with a mortgage, in Ward 20 in Johnstown, PA. His father worked as a blacksmith and Joseph as a clerk in a furniture store.

In 1910 he and his parents and sister Maude lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, at 173 D Street in Johnstown. His father worked as a tool dresser at a steel works, and he as a reporter for a newspaper.

In 1920 he, his mother, brother Lawrence, and a boarder, 24-year-old Hallie Short, lived there. Their home had a mortgage on it at that time. Lawrence worked as a newspaper reporter, he as an advertiser for an automobile firm, and Hallie as a public school teacher.

In 1930 he, his wife, her mother, and her sister Ruth lived in a house they owned at 817 Menominee Road in Pontiac, MI. Their home was valued at $8700, and they did have a radio. He worked as an auto sales copy writer for an auto factory, and his mother-in-law as a practical nurse for a private family.
